That was the first, last and only time I have used the File Explorer context menu "Eject" function instead of the "Safely Remove" one from the taskbar. AFAIK both of those functions call "hotplug.dll" but perhaps not in exactly the same way. The only thing I know to have happened within the relevant time frame was using the "Eject" option in the File Explorer context menu of a "USB drive" to eject that device, instead of the "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" icon on the Taskbar (actually from the "Hidden Icons" folder accessed via the caret sign at right of the taskbar) as I usually do. Nevertheless, something happened the other day to upset those arrangements. I had to learn quite a bit about settings when I originally set this up, and think I have probably really covered all the relevant ones. In particular, hibernation is turned off in all the places where it might otherwise be invoked unnoticed, such as "hybrid sleep" (turned off) or "hibernate after" a chosen duration of sleep (set to "never"). So far as I can determine, all the settings affecting screensavers, sleep and/or hibernation are the same as they have always been. At present it is set at 30 minutes, and the screen saver at 25. All the other places show the same value - you can change it at any one of several places and it will propagate to the others. The sleep timer setting can be seen in several places the simplest is probably right-click on "Start", then Settings > System > Power and Sleep. In other words, the only problem now is that the desktop computer (only) will not go to sleep when scheduled, though it does go to sleep when commanded from the main menu. It does go to sleep when "sleep" is chosen from the power options in the Main Menu (click on "Start" icon, select "Power" directly above the "Start" icon, select "Sleep"). The computer does not, however, with or without screen saver, go to sleep after the chosen idle period, as it has always previously done. Re-installing the screen saver restored it to normal function - it turns on after the selected duration of inactivity. A few days ago, something happened to the desktop computer so that it suddenly stopped going to sleep after the selected idle time, and the screen saver also stopped appearing when scheduled. The laptop computer continues to function in that mode, exactly as it has done for many months. The point of that was to save having to log back in if I wanted to continue working. I had both computers, desktop and laptop, set up so they would go to sleep after a chosen duration of idle time, and a screen saver would come on 5 minutes before sleep, so if I wanted I could move the mouse or press a key and so stop the computer from going to sleep.
